Merle Wood & Associates is the joint central agent for sale of the 147-foot Cheoy Lee Dorothea III, with an asking price of $11,955,000.

Dorothea III is a 2007 build that has cruised more than 170,000 miles in the past eight years, according to the brokerage house. The yacht has had two refits that Merle Wood calls major: one in 2011, and another in 2015. Most recently, Dorothea III completed an Atlantic and South America circumnavigation that included cruising the fjords of southern Chile and Argentina.

There are four staterooms for as many as nine guests, along with a gymnasium and quarters for as many as nine crew. The owner’s deck is private with its own sitting room, on the bridge level.

According to Merle Wood, Dorothea III consumes only 26.4 gallons of fuel per hour at 10 knots, giving her a range of more than 6,000 nautical miles.

How is Dorothea III built? With steel. It’s 20 millimeters at the keel, 12 millimeters going out from the keel, and 8 millimeters to the bulwarks. The superstructure is FRP with carbon fiber in high-stress areas.

The team at 26 North Yachts sends word that the owner of the 100-foot Cheoy Lee Happiness just dropped his asking price by $495,000. The new asking price is $3.495 million.

Happiness is a 2007 build that was refitted in 2018. According to the brokerage firm: “After acquiring Happiness last year, her owner addressed every single item that came up on her pre-purchase survey; then he opted to refresh and update virtually every facet of the yacht. The vast majority of this work was completed between July and October 2018, though notable work has taken place through May 2019.”

The engine room houses twin 1,650-horsepower Caterpillar C32s showing 4,459 hours apiece. Top speed, according to the brokerage firm, is 22 knots, with a cruising speed of 18 knots. Range is listed as nearly 1,800 nautical miles.

Little Big Ship: Cheoy Lee Bravo 72 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/little-big-ship-cheoy-lee-bravo-72/ Sat, 01 Jul 2017 17:02:12 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=50264 Cheoy Lee infuses its mega-yacht mindset into the bluewater-capable Bravo 72.

The post Little Big Ship: Cheoy Lee Bravo 72 appeared first on Yachting.

]]>
Cheoy Lee
The Bravo 72 is the entry-level boat in this Cheoy Lee line, which also includes the 78, 88 and 95. Jim Raycroft

Too many yacht reviews I read are diluted with fawning prose about inlaid woods, exotic marbles and sumptuous suedes. Construction, however, is the heart of every vessel, and to put the conclusion of this review first, Cheoy Lee sets some high construction standards.

The Bravo 72’s hull, deck and house are resin-infused fiberglass with Divinycell foam coring. Multiaxial E-glass composites are mixed with carbon fiber and Kevlar in critical areas, to reinforce without adding weight.

There is no structural wood on the Bravo 72, so components should never weaken. Cheoy Lee brought in Gurit, known for its work on high-end racing yachts, superyachts and military vessels, to provide a construction program based on Det Norske Veritas classification requirements for high-speed craft. Fuel, water and holding tanks are molded into the hull, creating a double-bottom safety zone in case the outer hull is holed. These sections add to the Bravo 72’s overall strength, as well as lower the contained liquid’s center of gravity. Vinylester resins and an epoxy barrier system are used on the hull to protect against blisters, and acrylic urethane is designed to last years longer than standard gelcoat. Beyond these durability measures, each Bravo 72 also carries a 2-year stem-to-stern limited warranty with 10-year structural hull warranty. (Additionally, each individual component warranty applies, if longer than Cheoy Lee’s warranty. For example, Kohler generators have a 5-year limited warranty.)

Cheoy Lee
The Bravo 72’s open galley makes it easy to serve guests at the dinette forward and in the salon. Windows create a strong connection to the environment. Jim Raycroft

Owners can choose 800 hp Volvo Penta IPS1050s with pod drives or 1,136 bhp Caterpillar diesels with V-drives for power, and the performance of the Volvo Penta IPS1050s on my test vessel suggested they will be a popular choice. My Bravo 72 hit 27.5 knots while her engines burned a total of 78 gallons per hour. With her 1,040-gallon fuel capacity and considering a 10 percent reserve, the Bravo 72 has about a 330-nautical-mile range at this speed. This engine option also provided nimble close-quarters joystick handling, and the pod drives eliminated the need for a multitude of systems (and hull openings), including bow thrusters, stuffing boxes, rudders and mufflers. Howard Apollonio’s slippery hull design, created to increase the water flow around the pods, was also a powerful factor in generating the 27-plus-knot top speed.

One of the most visible benefits of pod drives on any yacht is increased space. The Volvo Penta D3s are compact and low. There is 6-foot-2-inch headroom in the Bravo 72’s engine room, and a diamond-plate sole surrounds each power plant for walkaround serviceability.

Cheoy Lee
Sylvia Bolton Design created the Bravo 72’s interior, which has traditional warm wood tones that create balance with the contemporary flourishes. Jim Raycroft

This is an engine room designed by those who have spent hours in hot, cramped compartments and want to spare future yacht owners that stress. The Bravo 72 has racks along the finished hull sides to keep such systems as air conditioning, hydraulics, sanitation and the Reverso oil-changer at user-friendly heights. Twin 23 kW Kohler gensets have mega-yacht-style auto-transfer (see “Power to the People”). Clearly labeled electrical service panels and wiring are almost artistically perfect in looms, and the same description applies to the plumbing, with every hose not only labeled but also marked for direction of flow. Access to the engine room is not just through the transom (which can be dangerous at sea) but also via a pantograph door at the side deck.

To me, the Bravo 72 was obviously designed to be an owner-operated yacht, although there is a crew cabin with berth and head. For amateur or professional skippers, a pantograph door next to the lower helm accesses the side decks, while a foldout joystick station in the cockpit puts the skipper on the scene for docking. Additional stations can be added.

BIG BOAT BENEFITS

Most boatbuilders start with smaller yachts, which can cause problems as they build larger ones. The steering system for an 80-footer, for example, must be far more than twice as sturdy as a 40-footer’s. Cheoy Lee, however, builds everything, from oceangoing ships to tugs, so the Bravo 72 benefits from the demands of captains who need rugged construction and easy-to-maintain systems. Started in 1870, Cheoy Lee is one of the world’s oldest boatbuilders, and its experience is seen in the details, such as neatly organized and labeled wiring and plumbing.

Sylvia Bolton deisgned the Bravo 72’s interior, drawing from a palette of high-gloss walnut, wenge in the planked sole and zebrawood accents. The counterpoint of light and dark wood was pleasing to the eye. An entertainment area is aft, with no bulkheads to obstruct the view forward through the windshield, so the yacht felt open. It took me a moment to realize there was no interior stairway to the bridge, an element that usually chops up the interior sightlines. The main deck has a day-head, tucked away to starboard opposite the amidships galley (based on a client request). Carrying the owner-operator concept forward, the galley is open with a center island and country kitchen-style dinette under the windshield.

The master stateroom is full-beam (19 feet 10 inches) and amidships on the lower deck. The space has a walk-in closet to port with an en suite head to starboard. It has twin sinks and a shower with seat.
Forward, the en suite VIP has an island berth notable for the bins on each side, providing space for guests’ “stuff,” from paperbacks to reading glasses. Abaft to port, a guest stateroom has side-by-side berths with access to the lower day-head. Across the companionway is a third guest stateroom with two bunks.

The flybridge is, in a word, spacious. There is seating fore and aft, a dining table for alfresco meals, a grill and a fridge. The fiberglass hardtop is standard, and it can be enclosed to stretch the boating season. One level down, the flybridge overhang protects the aft deck, creating another entertaining area with settee and bar.

All in all, the Cheoy Lee Bravo 72 is thoughtfully designed and equipped, impeccably engineered and built, and sure to catch the eye of any skipper looking for an owner-operated yacht, especially one with bona fide mega-yacht overtones.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Kohler’s Decision-Maker 3500 Controls manages the Bravo 72’s two generators. The controller matches power to load needs, eliminating under-loading and over-fueling. Load-management software monitors vessel power needs, adding or dropping the second generator as required.

WORRY-FREE

Yachts built overseas can be wonderful, right up until something breaks and requires parts or service that seem to be nonexistent in North America. For U.S. owners, Cheoy Lee sources everything, from bow thrusters to doorknobs, to appliances to electronics, in the United States, and then ships them to its yard for installation. Have a problem? All equipment carries a U.S. warranty and local service.

Cheoy Lee’s Global 104 was featured in our October issue and we couldn’t wait to climb back aboard at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show to bring you on board via video.

Sylvia Bolton Design styled the Global 104’s interior and the yacht pops with colorful accents. From the beach photos that immediately catch your eye as you walk from the salon to the main-deck master or down the companionway belowdecks, to the bright artwork above each berth — one of which is a rainbow cat reminiscent of Lisa Frank’s works — the interior of this motoryacht is striking.

It’s hard not to notice the seemingly infinite floorspace on the top deck of the Global 104. Forward you’ll find a Portuguese bridge, a sun pad and stairs that lead to a large foredeck. Aft, there is a wet bar, a BBQ and plenty of room for stowing toys.

Quick specs: She’s powered with 1,900 hp Caterpillar C32 ACERT diesels and can hit a top speed of 25.5 knots, providing a range of 504 nm.

Bold is a fitting adjective for the Cheoy Lee Global 104. And it takes a village to create a striking, bluewater-capable craft like this one. The 104 came to life through a collaboration among her owner, a renowned naval architect, an award-winning interior designer and, of course, the highly experienced Hong Kong-based shipyard.

SMART HULL SHAPE

Overing Yacht Designs created a functional hull form with generous bow flare for punching waves. The 104’s slightly raked sheer line lengthens her profile while simultaneously seeming to lower it. Incorporating prop tunnels into the yacht’s hull bottom gives her an island-friendly, 5-foot-10-inch draft.

OPTIMIZED DESIGN

Railings line all exterior walkways, emphasizing safety. Side decks along the salon yield to staircases going forward, allowing space for a full-beam, on-deck master. Crew can traverse the yacht from the outside without having to pass through living areas, and owners get masterful views from their abode.

SPACE IS THE PLACE

Styled by Sylvia Bolton Design, the interior includes a salon with deep, L-shaped sofas to port and starboard. A dark-tone, three-tier coffee table creates a striking contrast to the walnut wood and cream-colored vinyl wall panels. There was a need to keep simplicity in the space planning, Bolton says. The salon and dining areas are larger than first envisioned. Eliminating an athwartships walkway and pushing the bulkhead forward allowed for a buffet and 10-seat dining table.

FEED ME

A country kitchen on the main deck is a prep area and social zone. The portside marble countertop runs fore to aft and the full length of the space, with an elongated window above for a great view while cooking. The galley also has a dinette with a U-shaped settee, oversize table and room for a couple of stools. GE Monogram appliances include a full-height fridge/freezer, dishwasher, garbage disposal, four-burner electric cooktop, microwave and separate oven. Most appliances, electronics and ship’s systems are brands with parts and service available in North America. Cheoy Lee sources these products here and ships them to Hong Kong to be used in the yachts destined for the United States.

MASTERFUL

The master has a low-profile king berth with a padded headboard that climbs the wall and juts out along the overhead for a contemporary vibe. Plush carpeting that feels great underfoot, along with vinyl and polished-wood wall coverings, make the suite inviting. Bolton’s interior styling is fresh thanks to colorful throw pillows. “The owners were enthusiastic for bright colors, a friendly feel,” Bolton says. Complementing the space is a his-and-her en suite head with common shower, portside vanity that doubles as a work area, and starboard settee.

EVERYONE’S A VIP

Belowdecks, four staterooms accommodate at least eight guests. There’s a forward twin berth, two staterooms with queen berths and one with a king berth. Each has en suite heads with shower stalls and basin sinks, along with walnut cabinets and marble counters. Smart design work minimizes the space for the staircase and foyer while maximizing each stateroom’s living area.

TOP FLOOR

A full-beam, air-conditioned sky lounge has oversize settees that accommodate as many as 15 guests, all of whom can enjoy movie night on the 75-inch flat-screen TV. There’s also a bar with fridge and a coffee table with hidden ottomans. Aft through the sliding glass doors is a wet bar topped with rosso verona marble, plus a fridge and ice maker. Got sundowners? Across is an electric grill station. A 1,700-pound davit will lower the tender and PWC that can be stowed here, or owners can drop in a few lounge chairs or a table for alfresco dining.

COMMAND CENTER

Forward of the sky lounge is the enclosed pilothouse with helm station. The dash is large enough for dual 19-inch displays, and the console houses the CAT engine displays, thruster/throttle controls and more. Three Stidd helm chairs make for comfortable cruising, and pilothouse doors provide access to the Portuguese bridge, sun pad and foredeck.

CONFIDENT PERFORMER

The owner requested a 20-knot cruising speed, so weight savings were vital. The 104’s hull, deck, superstructure, bulkheads and cabin soles are vinylester-resin infused, multi-axial E-glass reinforced, foam-cored fiberglass. Cabinetry and partitions are honeycomb-cored. Powering this 211,500-pound yacht is a pair of 1,900 hp Caterpillar C32 ACERT diesels. At 75 percent engine load, the 104 sped along at 21.1 knots, with the Cats burning a total of 155 gph. She topped out at 25.5 knots with the diesels burning 201 gph, resulting in a range of about 504 nautical miles. With 5,200 gallons of fuel, just pick your waypoint and go.

HAPPY CREW, HAPPY BOAT

Your crew is treated like family aboard the Cheoy Lee Global 104. There are berths for five crew in the aft quarters, with separate heads and showers, a galley and a private entrance.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Started in 1870, Cheoy Lee Shipyards remains family-owned, currently by the fifth generation of the Lo family. A builder of commercial and sailing boats as well as yachts, Cheoy Lee stays at the forefront by utilizing the latest in steel, aluminum, fiberglass and composite materials. Production machinery includes five-axis CNC cutters, plasma cutters, milling/rolling machines, 8 mmlathes and more, all part of a 28-acre production facility.

MAKING IT HAPPEN

It’s one thing to buy a yacht. It’s another to envision your dream boat, then find a team that shares your vision and can turn it into a 104-foot, style-forward, ocean-ready reality. It’s a bold move, to be sure. But as we all know, the bold are often rewarded.

Cheoy Lee has launched its first Global Series 104 Pilothouse yacht, an evolution of the builder’s Bravo and Global lines from designer Jon Overing and interior designer Sylvia Bolton.

In an unusual use of space, the 104 has both a full-beam master stateroom and a country kitchen-style galley on her main deck. Four guest staterooms are belowdecks along with quarters for five crew.

Power is a pair of 1,900-horsepower Caterpillar C32 ACERTs. Expected speeds and range were not released, but Cheoy Lee is promising “impressive levels of speed and fuel economy.”

Fuel capacity: 5,200 gallons for long-range cruising.
