]]>Outer Reef Yachts works closely with its owners to help them make insightful choices with their builds, studying every Outer Reef that came before and benefitting from the latest and greatest marine industry innovations. The builder currently has one of its Classic Series 720s for sale, a 2020 called Suertudo, listed at $3.45 million.
“The Outer Reef Classic Series is known for exceptional sea keeping abilities, excellent accommodation and volume, classic design, and beautiful custom interiors; this has allowed for the highest level of retention of value in the marketplace,” Outer Reef Yachts says. “The opportunity to purchase this 2020, 72-foot Outer Reef without a multiyear wait for a new delivery of a sistership at significantly higher pricing, and the only pre-owned 72 available worldwide, is truly unique and should be considered very strongly by knowledgeable purchasers who have done their diligence in studying the cruising market in this size range.”
For long-range, bluewater-capable cruisers like the 720 construction is a critical factor to consider during the buying process. Outer Reef utilizes a hand-laid FRP hull with PVC core sandwich construction above the waterline and solid laminate, commensurate for hull size, made in a female mold. Suertudo has a vinylester barrier lamination for osmosis protection with a gel-coated finish above the waterline and two coats of black antifouling paint over five coats of epoxy primer below the waterline.
According to Outer Reef, many of its upcoming builds in the 67-foot to 72-foot range will feature the twin 750 hp John Deere series engines thanks to their fuel efficiency and dependability. At 9 knots under load, owners can expect a 2,000-nautical-mile range; slowing to 8 knots increases its maximum range to 2,700 nautical miles.
“This significant range has allowed sisterships to travel to very remote destinations of more than 8,000 nautical miles with fewer stops for fuel,” Outer Reef says. “Also, unlike full displacement yachts of this length that are limited to 10-knot maximums, Seuertudo can maintain a speed of 14 knots at 80 percent engine load if required.”
The transom bench seat and fixed dining table along with loose chairs offer alfresco dining for up to six in the cockpit. Maybe the most interesting feature on the main deck is the window separating the cockpit from the salon lowers and the flat-screen TV that pops out of the entertainment center cabinets can rotate for cockpit viewing.
The flybridge has two distinct sections with the hardtop-covered section forward and the open-air aft section. Aft, the space is set up for tender and PWC stowage while guests will find two L-shaped dinettes flanking the flybridge forward of the grill station, under the hardtop.
Salon has a warm and inviting atmosphere with satin-finished teak joinery throughout and an L-shaped settee to port with a second settee to starboard.
Forward, the maindeck galley sits amidships to port with an open layout, a granite-topped island, a 36-inch French door refrigerator/freezer, a dishwasher, a microwave, a wine cooler and an oven with a cooktop.
Regarding sleeping accommodations, owners and their guests will find three staterooms belowdecks and a crew cabin that can be used as a fourth guest cabin. The full-beam amidships master stateroom has a centerline king berth while the forepeak VIP has a centerline queen berth. The third guest cabin has over-under berths.

]]>Yachting previously wrote about the Kruegels, a Florida-based couple who cruised their way through four boats—a 19-foot center console, a 30-foot Regal, a Mainship 430 and a Fountaine Pajot sailing catamaran—before deciding on an Outer Reef 650.
“For David and Nicole Kruegel, cruising is for their birds. Leeloo, a white-bellied caique parrot, and Atticus (Atti for short), an eclectus parrot, take to the seas as eagerly as they do the air. The Kruegels are significantly expanding their voyages in their new full-time home on the water—a 2009 Outer Reef 650 Motoryacht—and the 7-year-old parrots are enthusiastic companions,” Yachting wrote.
“As the Kruegels settle into their Outer Reef 650 Motoryacht, Avalon, there’s something for everyone. The boat has a 3,500-nautical-mile range, which will enable them to check off a bucket-list item: transiting the Panama Canal and exploring the Pacific.”
For owners looking to cruise like the Kruegels, Outer Reef Yachts currently has Tasman, a 2006 650 motoryacht, listed for $1.295 million. Tasman recently had a complete service of its stabilizer system, and work done on its main engines and generators.
The 650’s current owners added a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer system, extended freezer and refrigeration, a voltage and cycles converter, and additional systems and cabinetry changes from the original design.
“Tasman was originally delivered to Seattle, WA, to a New Zealand client with over 50 years of cruising and sailing experience,” Outer Reef Yachts says. “After Tasman changed ownership, she was kept in the northwest for a period of time by her second owners. These owners have cruised Tasman extensively, and even shipped the yacht to Europe and cruised there. The yacht spent the last year in Grenada, until her recent arrival in Fort Lauderdale—a 1,500 nautical mile voyage.”
The salon’s satin-varnished teak interior and seating layout combine for a warm and inviting ambiance. An L-shaped sofa to port and two lounge chairs to starboard complete the lounge seating aft. Amidships, the galley features a U-shaped granite countertop, a built-in oven, an electric stove top, a dishwasher, a microwave and a full-size side-by-side refrigerator/freezer.
The broad strokes of the exterior entertainment spaces on board Tasman include forward-facing bench seating on the foredeck, alfresco dining in the cockpit and a variety of lounge seating on the flybridge.
Construction for Tasman includes a hand laid-up FRP deckhouse, flybridge and hull, with PVC foam sandwich construction above the waterline and vinylester barrier lamination for osmosis protection.
Sleeping accommodations include:
Twin Caterpillar C-9 diesel engines allow for a 2,000-plus-nautical-mile range cruising at 9 knots. The engines currently have 3,400 hours on them.

]]>My Kimberly, a 2007 Outer Reef 800 MY, is a bluewater cruising yacht that accommodates six guests, plus four crew. Designed for long-range voyages, My Kimberly is on the market for $2.1 million.
Windows surrounded My Kimberly‘s salon, allowing natural light to fill the room. The salon is open to the forward galley, separated by a breakfast bar with three bar stools. The woodwork brings out a calming, cozy feeling. Guests can relax on the portside sofa and two starboard side chairs while catching a game on the new TV located in the entertainment cabinet to starboard.
The first thing you see in My Kimberly’s galley is the full-sized, Jenn-air double-door refrigerator with freezer drawer for stowing cold goods. Spacious countertops and a stainless-steel sink provide room for food prep. A Miele dishwasher and KitchenAid trash compactor make for easy clean up. The galley amenities include:
Forward of the galley, separated by the bulkhead and door, is My Kimberly’s pilothouse. Two Stidd helm seats are positioned within an easy reach of all controls. Doors to port and starboard lead to the side decks, a staircase leads directly to the flybridge and another staircase leads to the portside staterooms. Abaft the helm is a C-shaped dinette, which could be a great spot for joining the captain for meals while taking in the view. My Kimberly has the following electronics and navigation tech.
My Kimberly’s aft deck has a teak table that comfortably sits six-plus guests on a bench-style settee and four chairs. The aft deck has a teak sole and is shaded by the flybridge, but guests can lay out on the swim platform, or head up to a lounge chair on the flybridge to improve their tan. The flybridge is partially covered by a hardtop, giving guests the option of sun or shade. Throw some burgers on the grill while relaxing on either the portside or starboard side L-shaped settees with table, or step back to the teak flybridge aft deck and relax in the sun on a couple of loungers or chairs. Unload the tender, a new 2022 Novurania 400DL with Yamaha F50, with the 2,200-pound-capacity davit and head out on a private beach excursion.
After a long day on the water, relax in one of three staterooms. The master stateroom is a full-beam affair with a walk-around centerline berth and en suite head. The semi-gloss cherry bulkheads, cabinetry and carpeted sole make for an at-sea oasis. Owners have plenty of stowage space with a walk-in closet, a bedside table and room under the berth. The forepeak VIP is accessible from the pilothouse stairway. There is a queen-size berth, en suite head and plenty of stowage in two hanging lockers and drawers. The guest stateroom has two twin-sized berths and is located to port and forward the master stateroom. Crew quarters for four are located aft through a watertight door at the transom. Owner-operators could use these extra quarters for teenagers seeking privacy or just use it as extra stowage space. The crew quarters have a galley, a full head, a dinette and a refrigerator and freezer.
Outer Reef Yachts stated that, “My Kimberly is a proven bluewater vessel that was built for comfort and long-range cruising. Cruise speeds in the upper teens make running from weather easy and hull-down operation increases efficiency for great range. Spacious living areas that encompass clever interior design allows access to the master stateroom from the salon staircase or through a door from the master walk-in closet to the forward guest stateroom hallway. All three staterooms have ensuite heads, A/V systems, and plenty of storage and hanging space. The crew quarters are quite large and can sleep four”.
Where is My Kimberly located? The yacht is currently lying in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

]]>Chic and sleek are not words typically associated with long-range motoryachts, yet the Outer Reef Yachts Trident 620 is an exception. Designed by noted naval architect Ward Setzer, the long-range sports motoryacht with its fast-semidisplacement hull form is a powerful combination of contemporary style and performance.
“She is a vessel that has Outer Reef’s oceangoing pedigree at her core and is also easy on the eyes. The 620 is a great trawler built to help ambitious owners step up from casual cruising to serious voyaging and still look good on the water. Outer Reef sees the Trident line as a stepping stone for yachtsmen who are coming out of first or second boats and who may want to cruise the world,” Yachting previously reported.
Anne Marie is a 2018 620 Trident that was built by Outer Reef Yachts and is currently listed with the builder for sale. The asking price is $1.195 million. This flybridge motoryacht can reportedly cruise long at 5 knots for more than 1,600 nautical miles, or jog at 21 knots thanks to its twin 600 hp Cummins QSB 6.7-liter diesels and its Zeus pod-drive system. It’s worth noting the flybridge is equipped with a hydraulic hardtop that can lower for bridge clearances, making it a contender for Great Loop cruisers.
Sole-to-ceiling wood finishes and light- and space-enhancing windows create a warm and inviting atmosphere in the salon. The seating arrangement consists of a four-person L-shaped settee and ottoman to port and two loose chairs to starboard. Forward and two steps up is the open galley. Galley features and appliances include:
Farther forward, a single Stidd helm seat is on centerline at the lower helm station. The helm seat doubles as an extra dining seat, just swivel to port, set up the folding table and join guests at the C-shaped dinette.
Sleeping accommodations belowdecks include two staterooms. Along with a king-size berth, the full-beam (16’2″) amidships master stateroom has under-berth stowage, a walk-in cedar-lined closet and an en suite head. The forepeak VIP stateroom is also en suite and has a tapered queen berth with under-berth stowage. On Anne Marie, the space that is normally the portside guest stateroom is set up as an at-sea office.
In the cockpit, guests can enjoy shaded alfresco dining underneath the flybridge overhang at the U-shaped transom bench seat and fixed table. Aft, a sun shade can be drawn to offer guests even more reprieve from the sun.
The flybridge also has alfresco dining at the L-shaped settee and table to port, abaft the upper helm station. The after section of the flybridge is a blank slate, just add loose furniture to meet your needs.

]]>For those looking for a blue-water capable vessel, Outer Reef Yachts might have just the yacht for you. The 2012 700 Long Range Motor Yacht known as Erma is currently listed with Outer Reef at an asking price of $2.6 million.
“There is nothing more satisfying than to build a yacht that is not only luxurious and comfortable for everyday cruising, but that also meets the highest of standards for the most treacherous of journeys,” Jeff Druek, president and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts, previously told Yachting about the 700 LRMY.
To meet these open-water-cruising standards, Outer Reef builds its hulls with hand-laid fiberglass and PBC core sandwich construction above the water line. There’s also vinylester barrier lamination for osmosis protection. The yacht also has full-length longitudinal engine stringers and athwartships stringers adding serious backbone to the yacht. The robust construction extends to all areas. For instance, the yacht’s salon windows are 3/8-inch tempered glass with half-inch tempered glass in the pilothouse.
Erma is powered with C-12 Caterpillar diesels that were completely rebuilt at 3,300 hours, which Outer Reef says included, replacing “all 12-cylinder liner kits, replaced cylinder heads, replaced connection rod bearings, removed, cleaned and reinstalled all coolers, aftercoolers replaced with new units, new thermostats, belts and hoses installed. All new fluids – engine oil, generator oil and transmission fluid, coolants and new filters as necessary.” The motors just had their 1,000-hour servicing completed in February 2023.
This powerplant setup provides a 22-knot top speed. At 9 knots, this long-range cruiser can travel nonstop for 3,000 nautical miles. The yacht also has a Bahamas-friendly 5-foot draft.
The salon is geared for relaxing after a long travel day and features an overhead decorative wood handrail and recessed lighting. There are two lounge chairs to starboard or a folding hi-lo table and six-person L-shaped sofa to port.
The well-appointed galley has state-of-the-art appliances, countertops and stowage, catering to the culinary aspirations of even the most discerning foodies. Galley appliances include:
The galley is separated from the pilothouse by an electronically controlled glass partition, allowing guests private dining at the forward dinette. The lower helm station has a two-seat arrangement.
Belowdecks are Erma’s three staterooms. The amidships master stateroom has an athwartships king berth with en suite head to port. The forepeak VIP stateroom has a centerline berth and an en suite head and the guest stateroom to port has bunk berths and an en suite head.
Erma’s cockpit is the perfect location for up to six people to enjoy alfresco dining thanks to its transom bench seat aft, fixed table and four loose chairs.
The after section of the flybridge houses a 2012 15-foot AB tender, which is equipped with a 70 hp Yamaha outboard. There’s also a grill station and sink here for seaside tailgating on game day. Forward, under the hardtop there are two L-shaped sofas with tables abaft the two-seat upper helm station.
Erma has two 20 kW Northern Lights generators with almost 2,000 hours on each. Both generators were fully serviced at approximately 1,700 hours. Some other notable features on board Erma include:

The layout includes three staterooms for owners and guests as well room for three crew.
The 860 DBMY is built to go the distance via its hand laid-up FRP hull with PVC core sandwich construction above water line. For the hull bottom, there is solid fiberglass.
Guests will instantly sense warmth and volume walking into the 86-footer’s salon with its smartly-placed furniture, cherrywood finishes and waist-to-ceiling windows running the length of the salon. A three-person bar is immediately to port, with a coffee table and L-shaped sofa forward, and a lounge chair to starboard.
Forward of the salon and up a step is the country galley. There is an L-shaped countertop and an island countertop, giving chefs plenty of room to prepare meals. The galley is equipped with KitchenAid refrigerator, Miele dishwasher with stainless interior, a Bosch oven, cooktop and microwave, Insinkerator garbage disposal with switch, GE Monogram trash compactor and a U-Line wine cooler. There is also has a six-person dinette forward.
All three staterooms are belowdecks, with cherrywood paneling and en suite heads and granite countertops. The full-beam (16’9″) master stateroom amidships has a centerline king berth, a 46-inch flat-screen TV, two cedar-lined walk-in closets and hand-scraped walnut sole. The forepeak VIP stateroom has a queen berth and a 29-inch flat-screen TV. The third guest stateroom has twin berths and a 24-inch flat-screen TV.

The after section of the flybridge provides alfresco dining for six with a table and chairs. The area also serves as the tender stowage for a 15-foot 2017 Walker Bay Generation 450 tender. The yacht tender has a 75 Evinrude Etec outboard, VHF radio with AIS system, Garmin 741XS, Airmar P319 transducer and Polk stereo with Sirius XM.
Heading down into the cockpit, there is a shaded alfresco dining space for six with the transom bench seat, fixed table and loose chairs. When it’s time to enjoy cocktails at sunset, the foredeck has three bench seats with two in the bowrider position and one facing forward.
Twin 1,600 hp Caterpillar C-32 diesels provide power for Insignia, giving this bluewater cruiser a reported 23-knot top-end speed and a cruising speed of 9 to 14 knots.
According to Outer Reef Yachts, the hardtop over the skylounge is designed with a fold-down mast and removable satellite domes, which reduces its air draft to 20-feet 6-inches, allowing it to cruise through the Erie Barge Canal. The yacht’s six-foot draft makes it an effective Bahamas cruiser too.

]]>Outer Reef Yachts, whose boats are known for their globe-girdling cruising itineraries, has launched its 670 Azure Sport Yacht.
This bluewater-capable, owner-operator cruiser, which is the flagship of the builder’s six-model S Class lineup, starts with solid hand-laid fiberglass construction for the hull below the waterline. Above the waterline, PVC sandwich core is used for strength without added weight. All in, this 67-footer displaces about 99,000 pounds. The yacht is outfitted with ABT Trac 220 stabilizers with 6-square-foot fins to further enhance the ride over the long haul.
Power for the 670 Azure Sport Yacht is a pair of 985 hp Caterpillar C-12.9 diesels paired to a ZF transmission. (The standard spec is twin 500 hp John Deere diesels.) In addition to main engines, those passages are supported by two 20 kW Northern Lights gensets to ensure all of the hotel loads, including the MarineAir direct air conditioning, have the required juice when the only sight is the next horizon.

Both helm stations have Stidd seats and Garmin multifunction displays. The flybridge also has an L-shaped settee seating to port and abaft the helm as well as room for a grill and tender stowage on the aft deck.
Accommodations include a full-beam (17’2”) owners’ stateroom amidships with a king-size berth, a walk-in closet, satin-finish teak bulkheads, doors and cabinets, and an en suite head with teak-and-holly sole and a shower. There is also a forepeak VIP with a queen-size berth and a guest stateroom to port with two bunks. The VIP has access to the guest head with a shower. There is also head access off the companionway.
On the main-deck, the entertainment-centric layout starts with the galley aft. A drop-down window helps create a seamless connection between the salon and cockpit. The Azure 670 Sport Yacht’s galley is set up with GE appliances, in microwave, electric cooktop, oven, undercounter refrigerator, trash compactor and garbage disposal.
In the cockpit, there are two bar stools and a countertop facing the galley further illustrating the indoor-outdoor connectivity. There is also a dining table under the flybridge overhang abaft the bar area with bench seating along the transom.
Stairs to starboard lead to the lower teak cockpit, while a second door provides access to the hydraulic swim platform, which lowers to let owners to launch a tender and water toys, as well as prep to go scuba diving and swimming.
For sun and breeze, accompanied by some quietude, the 670 Azure Sport Yacht has a foredeck lounge with U-shaped seating around a teak table. It’s a great spot for sundowners on the hook.
With its robust construction, long-range-cruising accommodations, reliable power and a layout conducive to family-friendly voyages, the Outer Reef Yachts 670 Azure Sport Yacht should make the short list for enthusiasts ready to aim for that second star to the left and head straight on till morning.

]]>The post Outer Reef 650 Motoryacht & Cruising with Parrots appeared first on Yachting.
]]>For David and Nicole Kruegel, cruising is for their birds. Leeloo, a white-bellied caique parrot, and Atticus (Atti for short), an eclectus parrot, take to the seas as eagerly as they do the air. The Kruegels are significantly expanding their voyages in their new full-time home on the water—a 2009 Outer Reef 650 Motoryacht—and the 7-year-old parrots are enthusiastic companions.
Boats and birds have been constants in Nicole’s life. Her childhood home was Tempest, a 1937 46-foot wooden sloop anchored in Dana Point, California. She got her first bird, a lovebird, at age 7 and has had feathered friends ever since. David grew up in Ormond Beach, Florida, and has spent countless hours water-skiing, surfing and scuba diving. Their mutual love of the water drew them together and assured they would always be a boating couple.
They started in 2007 with a 19-foot center-console, then, two years later, moved up to a 30-foot Regal. A 2016 cruise through the Abacos aboard their Mainship 430 trawler convinced the duo that it was time to find a boat that they, their two cats and the birds could live on full time. “Every time we sailed, we had to board the birds, and it was a big hassle to find a facility that could take care of them properly,” David says.
They took delivery of a Fountaine Pajot sailing catamaran in March 2020. After sailing along the Eastern Seaboard and the Florida Keys, in fall 2021, they returned to the Bahamas, this time with the parrots. “It was a learning experience for U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and for the Bahamian immigration and customs folks because they’d never had to do this before,” David says. The Kruegels scrambled to complete paperwork and health checks before leaving the United States. Upon their arrival at West End, they found the Bahamian officials less interested in paperwork than in taking selfies with the birds.
The family cruised Grand Bahama, the Abacos, Eleuthera, the Exumas, the Berry Islands and Bimini.
Having parrots “is like having a 3- or 4-year-old forever,” David says. First, there’s the diet. They need daily fresh fruits and vegetables, which can be difficult to find while cruising. Leeloo can be a picky eater. “We gave her a green apple in the Bahamas, and she threw it back at us,” Nicole says.
As the Kruegels settle into their Outer Reef 650 Motoryacht, Avalon, there’s something for everyone. The boat has a 3,500-nautical-mile range, which will enable them to check off a bucket-list item: transiting the Panama Canal and exploring the Pacific. The interior gives the humans plenty of room to lounge and the birds lots of interior flight space.
In the parrots’ customized aft starboard cabin, the top bunk has been removed to allow more room for their cage and a view out the window. The birds also have their own head with a perch beside a big mirror. “Leeloo likes to look at herself and talk to herself all day,” Nicole says. There’s also plenty of room for the birds’ snacks and toys.
On rough sea days, the parrots prefer to hunker down in their cabin. But on calm days, “they can’t wait to get out,” Nicole says. “They’re eager to see where they are and what’s going on. They get so excited.”
Outer Reef Yachts has experienced strong demand for the 650. Recently, it has invested in reengineering this bluewater voyager. The 650’s updated design has enabled a 4-stateroom, 4½-head layout—a best-in-class long-range motoryacht.
The Outer Reef 650 MY is part of the builder’s Classic series, which includes 15 other model variations from 63 to 90 feet LOA across three vessel classes called S, M and X. Beam dimensions identify each class. It also has Trident, a modern long-range sports motoryacht line with 62- and 72-footers as well as an Explorer series with a 108- and 115-footer.
